- You can tell your parents in whatever way feels easiest, including a text or letter.
- Share what you've noticed about yourself, not just the word "autistic."
- Showing them a page like this one can help them understand.
- They may need time to take it in. That's normal.
- If they don't listen, a school counselor or doctor can help.
Ways to bring it up
Write it
A text, an email, or a note. You get to say it exactly how you want, and they get time to think.
Pick a calm time
Not when someone is stressed or rushing. A car ride or a walk can feel easier than face to face.
Bring examples
"School wipes me out," "noise is really hard," "I copy other people to fit in." Specific things help them see it.
A message you can send
I want to tell you something I've been thinking about. I've been reading about autism, and a lot of it sounds like me. Things like [school wearing me out / noise being really hard / not getting what people mean]. I'd like to talk to a doctor about it. Can we talk about how to do that?
Parents can find their own guide at the parents' side of MOEˣ.
If they don't get it
- Give it a few days. Many parents need time.
- Talk to your school counselor. They can help you explain, or talk with your parents.
- Ask your doctor at your next checkup. You can ask for a few minutes to talk privately.
